Gerassimos Sapountzoglou was born in Athens in 1950. He has studied Economics at the Athens School of Economics and Business Sciences and has received his Doctoral Degree in Economics from the Dijon University, France.

He is currently a member of the faculty at the Department of Economics of the Athens University of Economics and Business (Assistant Professor). He has served as a General Manager of "Ionian and Popular Bank of Greece S.A.", as well as Executive Vice President of the Board of Directors (1993 - 1996). He has been President of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of "Ionian Investments S.A." and Vice President on the Board of Directors of "Ionian Finance S.A." (1993-1996). He has participated in the Executive Committee as well as in the Scientific Committee of the Hellenic Bank Association and in the Board of Directors of "DIAS S.A. - Interbanking Systems" (1993 - 1997).

He was named President of the Greek "Organization for Vocational Education and Training", in 1997. He was chosen to be Vice President at the 2nd International Congress of UNESCO, in 1999 (Seoul/Korea). He was appointed member of the "Competitiveness Advisory Group" of the European Commission in 1995.

He has been Advisor of the Directorate - General XX (Financial Control) of the European Commission and permanent member of the Economic Policy Committee and the Monetary Committee of the European Union. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the "European Investment Bank - Luxemburg" (1983 - 1986). He has worked as a Special Advisor for the Greek Ministry of National Economy and Ministry of Finance (1981 - 1986).

His current teaching courses are: "Banking Theory & Practice", "Money & Banking", "Tehory & Practice for Economic Integration", "Banks & Others Financial Institutions (Master's Programme)", "Banking Applications (Master's Programme)".

His research interests and publications refer to Financial Analysis and Banking Economics, Public Finance Policy and European Economic Integration.
